The Turkish government is investigating claims that the computer game Minecraft is violent, according to reports.

The game is suitable for children between 7 and 10 years old in the majority of Europe and the United States. According to the Haberturk website the country's social and family policy minister, Aysenur Islamic, has initiated an investigation into claims that the game encourages aggression. If the site is deemed to be too violent, then the government may seek an all-out ban, the website states. A journalist told Mrs Islam that players score points for killing other characters, including women. She asked her ministry what they would do to address the issue. The Pan European Game Information group, which assigns ratings to computer games, says Minecraft contains "non-realistic-looking violence towards characters which, although human, are not very detailed".

A journalist at one Turkish gaming magazine says that the ministry's concerns are misplaced. Kaan Gezer is a Leadergamer journalist, claimed that she's never witnessed an infant use a sword to attack people because Minecraft. "Stories like this cause the video game industry in Turkey to stall or even worsen." Minecraft is extremely popular with gamers of all ages, registering its 100 millionth user in February 2014. Teachers at some schools in the UK have also played the game.
